Hi everyone!
Newbie to the forum, lots of useful info and ideas here!!

I am adding factory fog lights to my fusion. I bought the fog lights, black inserts, and the factory fog light switch.

My problem is, there is no power going to the fog light portion of the switch, or the fog light "on"indicator LED. (the required wires that connect to the switch are there, just no power going to them.) These wires go to the SJB (smart junction box)

But, there is no wiring, fuse, or relay for the fogs in the BJB (battery junction box).

Has anyone here added fog lights (to a fusion that did not come with factory fogs) using a new factory fog light switch?

Looking at my factory wiring manual, there are 3 wires going to the fog switch, and looks like the 2 wires connect to ground with the switch on:

-brown/white: fog indicator
-grey/violet: fog lamps on
-black/violet: ground

I am not sure how to get power to the fog indicator LED, and have a power wire coming from the fog switch, to trigger a relay I will be adding, to power the fogs. :dunno:

If I can get the power from switch-to-relayfigured out, the rest is pretty easy. :)

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Stew182.

What you are looking for it a wire that either give a (+) 12v signal or a ground when the fog light switch it pulled out.

This might be a dumb question. . . but have you swapped OEM headlight switches yet? That is the one in the car now with the one with the pull out fog option?

Once you have done that you should have your wire.

Does that make any sense?

Let me know dude!

Thanks for the reply Garrett.
Yes, I have swapped the headlight switch to the new OEM switch, that includes the fog switch.

I did some testing to the fog portion of the switch.

I connected a 12v wire from the fusebox,to the "BN-WH" pin#7 on the switch (fog indicator LED).

Also wired the "BK-VT" pin#1, to ground.

The LED works when the switch is on, ond turns off when the switch is off.

With the switch OFF, there is 12v being fed to pin#6, "GY-VT" (Fog Lamps On wire), and 0.1v when switch is ON.

My question is; do I need to wire a relay that has a terminal 87a, and wire it to be NC (normally closed) ???

Also, when pin#6, "GY-VT" (Fog Lamps On wire) is grounded, the Fog Indicator LED always stays on , whether the switch is on, OR off .

Can someone please explain to me how I can wire this switch to a relay that will power my fogs, and have the Fog Indicator LED work properly?????

I have attached a scan of the switch, from the factory wiring manual.

Aight -

Picture speaks a thousand words!

First way:

Let me know if that helps!

EDIT: I should have read your whole post. My bad. Throw a diode on there in-between the switch and 86. This enables the relay to function correctly, but keeps the switch and the LED inside it from 'seeing' the completed circuit.

Oh btw - on the diode, put the stripe on the relay side. (Cathode side of diode)

Thanks Garrett,
I have already tried wiring the relay as shown in your pic (without the diode, as I don't have one yet), and it will NOT trigger the relay. :bash:

I measured the voltage from the Grey/Violet pin on the switch, it measures 12v, but only about 25mA or so coming from it. (not enough current to turn on the relay?):(

I never thought this switch would be such a pain in the @$$ to wire to a relay! :x

I'm stumped on this one. What can I try next??

Finally got it working!!
Thanks for the help Garrett!!
You asked me where my ground was, and that gave me the idea to use the ground to switch the relay!

Here's how I wired it:
85 - to Grey/Violet (pin#6) on fog switch (this shorts to ground with fog switch on)
86- power from sidemarker light (Grey/Yellow)
30- fused power from battery
87- to fog lights

To power the "fog lights on" LED, I spliced into the Violet/Grey wire (pin#5, "cluster & panel illumination")

Everything works perfect!!

A big thanks to Garrett, you have been super for helping me figure this out!! :) :)

Thanks again,

Hey Stew any chance you could post what you used, and any advice, tips guidance not already in this thread. I am looking to add fog lights to my fusion as well, but I don't know where to start at this point. However, I am readily armed with my soldiering iron and multi-meter(along with various other toys to numerous to list), and have a reasonable decent understanding of what needs to happen.
